Breaking Free

Breaking Free

Sometimes the hardest family to walk away from is your own.

Breaking Free is my story of growing up in a family where love, loyalty and silence became tangled together — and what happened when I finally found the courage to question everything I had been taught about what it meant to be a good daughter.

It’s a story about toxic family dynamics, generational trauma and the difficult decision to walk away. But more than anything, it’s about what came afterwards: learning to trust myself, rebuilding my life and choosing not to pass the same patterns on to my own children.

This wasn’t the book I planned to write.

For years, I kept so much of my story to myself. Some things felt too complicated to explain. Others had simply become normal because I had lived with them for so long.

When I finally began writing, the words came faster than I expected. What started as a way of making sense of my own experiences became Breaking Free — a memoir about family, control, silence, survival and the moment I realised that loving people didn’t mean I had to keep allowing them to hurt me.

I wrote the first version in just 16 weeks. But in many ways, it had taken a lifetime to find the courage to tell it.

What Breaking Free is really about

Breaking Free isn’t simply a story about walking away from a toxic family. It’s about everything that can make walking away feel impossible in the first place — love, loyalty, fear, guilt, culture, expectations and the hope that maybe, one day, things will change.

It explores what happens when the people who are supposed to make you feel safest are also the people who make you question yourself. The impact of growing up around control, criticism and silence. And how those experiences can follow you into adulthood long after you’ve physically left them behind.

But this isn’t a book about staying stuck in the past.

At its heart, Breaking Free is about what becomes possible when you finally give yourself permission to choose differently.

FAMILY

When love becomes complicated

What happens when family loyalty costs you your sense of self — and questioning how you’re treated feels like betrayal?
Breaking Free explores the moment you begin to question what you once accepted as normal.

BREAKING THE CYCLE

Choosing a different path

Recognising the patterns you grew up with is one thing. Finding the courage to stop carrying them forward — into your relationships, your parenting and your future — is another. Sometimes breaking the cycle starts with simply choosing differently.

HEALING

Learning who you are afterwards

Walking away isn’t the end of the story. Breaking Free explores what comes next — rebuilding trust in yourself, creating boundaries and discovering who you are when you’re finally free to choose. Healing is learning to trust that choice.

Why I chose to tell the whole story

I didn’t write Breaking Free to expose people or settle old scores. I wrote it because for years I had struggled to understand my own experiences — and I knew I couldn’t be the only person who had ever felt that way.

There are things we’re taught not to talk about. Family problems. Things that happen behind closed doors. The moments that don’t fit the picture everyone else sees.

But silence can make you believe you’re the only one.

Writing honestly meant looking at parts of my life I had spent years trying to make sense of. It wasn’t always comfortable, but I wanted the story to be real — not a polished version that made everything easier to explain.

Because sometimes the story we’re most afraid to tell is the one somebody else most needs to hear.

Breaking Free is my story, but at its heart it’s about something much bigger — what happens when you stop living the life other people expect from you and finally give yourself permission to choose what comes next.

A story about more than walking away.

Breaking Free is about what happens when the family you’re supposed to feel safest with becomes the place you lose yourself. It’s about silence, loyalty, control and the difficult realisation that loving your family doesn’t mean accepting everything they do.

But it’s also about what comes after — learning to trust yourself again, creating boundaries, becoming a mother and making the conscious decision not to carry the same patterns into the next generation.
